Cutting-edge tech helps Europe’s search and rescue teams work together

Without the ability to work seamlessly together, Europe’s emergency response teams often have to depend on simple safety gear and their own ingenuity. To address this, the EU-funded Search and Rescue project created a communications system that enables different teams to work together more efficiently, sharing data and resources. Additionally, the project developed various technologies, including radiation detectors and a robotic dog designed to sniff out hazards.

The Search and Rescue project, involving 28 partners across 12 EU Member States, aimed to enhance disaster response through advanced technologies and improved collaboration. By building on previous projects, the consortium developed tools like smart uniforms, sensors, and an autonomous robot to aid first responders. Field-tested in various disaster scenarios, these innovations aim to improve coordination and effectiveness. The project emphasized ongoing stakeholder engagement to refine and implement these technologies, ultimately increasing the resilience of EU Member States to large-scale disasters.
